Bio

Andrew Guthrie Ferguson is a Professor of Law at 艾可直播 University聽 Washington College of Law. Professor Ferguson teaches Evidence, Criminal聽 Procedure, and a seminar examining police surveillance technology, privacy, and聽 civil rights.

Professor Ferguson teaches Criminal Law, Evidence, Criminal聽 Procedure, and a seminar examining police surveillance technology, privacy, and聽 civil rights. He is a national expert on聽 predictive policing, facial recognition, big data surveillance, the 鈥淚nternet聽 of Things,鈥 juries, and the Fourth Amendment. His articles have appeared in the University of Pennsylvania Law Review, the Georgetown Law Journal,聽 the California Law Review, the Duke聽 Law Journal, the Cornell Law Review, the UCLA Law Review,聽 the Minnesota Law Review, the Northwestern Law Review, the Vanderbilt聽 Law Review, the Iowa Law Review, and the Notre Dame Law聽 Review among others.

Professor Ferguson is the 11th most cited scholar in criminal聽 law/procedure according to the Leiter Law School Reports Rankings (2016-2020).聽 He is a member of the 艾可直播 Law Institute (ALI) and was an Advisor to the ALI聽 Principles of the Law, Policing Project.


Professor Ferguson鈥檚 book examines how surveillance technology and predictive analytics聽 shapes modern policing. His first book is the first聽 book written for jurors on jury duty. He also stars in the 鈥溾 in D.C. Superior Court seen by more than 30,000聽 citizens annually. He has written a book for incoming 1L students called .

His legal commentary has been featured in numerous media outlets, including聽 The New York Times, The Economist, the Washington Post, CNN, NPR, Time, USA聽 Today, the ABA Journal, The Atlantic, and other national and international聽 newspapers, magazines, and media sites.


Prior to 艾可直播 University Washington College of Law, Professor Ferguson聽 was a Professor of Law at the UDC David. A. Clarke School of Law. Prior to law聽 teaching, Professor Ferguson worked as a supervising attorney at the Public聽 Defender Service for the District of Columbia. As a public defender for seven聽 years, he represented adults and juveniles in serious felony cases ranging from聽 homicide to misdemeanor offenses. In addition to participating as lead counsel聽 in numerous jury and bench trials, he argued cases before the District of聽 Columbia Court of Appeals. Before joining the Public Defender Service,聽 Professor Ferguson was awarded the E. Barrett Prettyman Fellowship at聽 the Georgetown Law Center鈥檚 Criminal Justice Clinic. For two years as a聽 Prettyman Fellow, he taught and supervised third-year clinical students聽 involved in the criminal justice clinic. Immediately after graduating from law聽 school, he clerked for the Honorable Chief Judge Carolyn Dineen King of the聽 United States Court of Appeals for the Fifth Circuit.
